Where do I even begin with this place?! I connected with Katrina from Fortland this past winter about staying at the resort for a few days to photograph the yurts/tents and the grounds of the island. We set a date and I counted down the days until I could see this place. I brought a friend along to help with some photos as well as just enjoy ourselves. I had no idea what to expect but it absolutely kick ass.
Fortland is located on House Island off the coast of Portland, Maine. Old military fort, Fort Scammel, stood untouched for years before they took over their part of the island and built the resort. The experience of staying at Fortland is quite literally like no other. There are several yurts available as well as glamping tents that can sleep your entire family. The tent we stayed in had the most beautiful view of Casco Bay, but to be quite honest I don't think there's a bad view on the island!
There's tons to do on the island too.. from exploring the Bastions or taking a guided tour, watching the sun set from the Lookout Deck, enjoying the beach or playing cornhole in the parade ground, Fortland has it all. Your stay includes transportation to the island via a chartered boat, drinking water and toilets, cooking utensils and equipment and all linens. Just pack along your food and enjoy yourself!
It's tough to choose a favorite part of the experience. I loved hearing Stefan explain the history of Fort Scammel and see the forts up close and personal. Watching the sun rise and the way the light came into our tent in the morning was fantastic. And falling asleep to the sound of rain after a fire and s'mores was the perfect way to end our last evening.
If you're not convinced yet, maybe the photos will persuade you to book your trip here.
To Katrina, Stefan and the Fortland staff. Thanks so much for being so accommodating. I LOVED photographing this little slice of heaven for you guys and I cannot wait to come back!
Until next time, live creatively friends.
